DESCRIPTION:

In conjunction with the Property Officer, to have an overview of all current projects, future projects, and maintenance pertaining to property and grounds within the school, ensuring the school's buildings and facilities provide a safe, healthy learning environment for staff, students and visitors. Further to this, to ensure current school practices promote and provide a safe physical and emotional environment for students.

 

TASKS:

¨         To comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and all associated guidelines.

¨         To ensure the board complies in full with any legislation currently in force or that may be developed to ensure the safety of students and employees. To make the board aware of its responsibilities with regard to legislation and to develop plans/programmes to ensure the board is meeting its legal responsibilities.

¨         To have an understanding of the school's programmes and procedures which establish and provide a safe physical and emotional environment for students and the barriers that staff face in implementing, promoting and achieving desirable results from such programmes.

¨         To read,understand and implement the board's health and safety procedures concerns hazards checks.

¨         To ensure a hazards /safety inspection report is prepared mid- year for the board and safety with a focus on Evacuation Procedures, Accident Register and Medical Room procedures.

¨         To ensure a further hazards and safety inspection report is prepared with the focus on Hazards, and Plant and Machinery Safety.

¨         To report to the BOT on matters pertaining to health and safety, for the consideration of the board.

¨         To meet with the Property officer and principal on a regular basis, bringing to the board any concerns or issues they may have with regards to Health and Safety.

¨         To receive correspondence pertaining to health and safety, distributing and reporting on as necessary.

¨         To ensure health and safety are considerations in 10-year property plan with the BoT Property Plan.

¨         To ensure policies that relate to health and safety are regularly reviewed and updated.

 

ANNUAL TIME TABLE:

¨         Ongoing: Monthly compliance reports to BoT.  Ensure follow up action is reported.

¨         Mid year|: To complete and report on a full hazards review with a focus on Evacuation Procedures, Accident Register and Medical Room procedures.

¨         October: In October complete the further hazards and safety inspection with the focus on Hazards, and Plant and Machinery Safety and report to the board.

 

DELEGATED AUTHORITIES:

1.      Caretaker or principal is delegated the authority to return monthly compliance checks.

2.      In consultation with the principal review property requirements of the school where health and safety is an issue, investigate costs, scope of works and potential contractors, then provide a report, with recommendations, to the board.

3.      Provide, at the direction of and on behalf of the board, written communications to the Property Officer at the Ministry of Education on any matters concerning health and safety. (Copies of all written communications must be tabled at the relevant meeting of the board.)

4.      Responsibility for ensuring the Health and Safety Act requirements are met.

5.      Final decision-making lies solely with the full Board.
