HOMEWORK

It's very important that your child reads every night.  Every Monday to Thursday children are taking home a reading book.  At times it may be one they have brought home before but they are getting to choose a favourite one from their browsing box.  When children are learning to read it's important that they read a book at least four times to improve their fluency.  A fluent reader is one who is accurate, phrases appropriately, smooth, expressive, the reading is effortless and is well understood by the reader and the listener.  Fluency strengthens reading skills, builds confidence and motivation.  It is a reliable indicator of present and future skills in reading.  Repeated readings is one very effective strategy that fosters fluency.  Just like in everyday life we all learn so much more when we repeat a task for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time.

Children also bring home a library book on our library day - Monday.

On Friday's they are bringing home their Poetry and Song book.

At times there may be homework sheets in their homebooks.  I like to investigate blends and chunks to support our literacy programme.  You can view an example of some letter and blend sheets.  These can be done with your family or by your child.  They are a fun, interactive way children can draw pictures or write words that have the same sounds within them.

Their homebook will stay in the classroom over the weekend in order for me to mark and then prepare any sheets for the coming week.
