Values at Hillcrest Normal School
This past term the school has been working to clarify its values against those expected in the New Zealand Curriculum.
This resulted in the development of a values star identifying six core values to be promoted at school.
Over the term staff have each worked with these values in their own classrooms. Some of that work is presented below. It is developed using the concept of a treaty or partnership agreement formed between the teacher and their students for their classroom.
These agreements are reinforced throughout the year and form a strong basis for discussion and application of values in action. It sets a positive tone to the school.
We have worked with our kapahaka tutors to establish a Maori interpretation of the values rather than just a translation of the words and to build an understanding of how these values will look in practice for them under the headings of belonging, service and reciprocity.
Those of you who have had children at the school for a number of years will be aware that the school has completed in depth work on the key Competencies within the new Zealand Curriculum. Values have a strong part to play of the competencies as they underpin ways of relating to others, ways of participating and contributing, ways of managing self for the common good, how ways of thinking and the use of language symbols and text shape this.
Next term we will be talking to our community about the New Zealand Curriculum and the place that values have within it.
We will see our work on values in school progressed further through units of study in the social sciences curriculum.
